Discussion:
Sonar 6, Dual Core, and 64 bit Windows XP

Hi,

I'm building a new computer specifically for digital audio production.
I plan to build an Intel dual core PC with Windows XP Pro 64 bit.

I read Cakewalk's promotional material about Sonar 6 and 64 bit
compatibility, but would like to hear from real users.

Has anyone used Sonar on the 64 bit XP operating system? How do the 32
bit VST plug-ins perform? Will I have to downgrade the features in the
system to get a working audio station? Are there crucial workarounds
that I'll be faced with? Are there hardware concerns that I'll face,
specifically with my Creamware Luna II? Will I need a new new audio
card? Will I need to limit my plug ins to those that support 64 bit?

VST instruments are my main concern, but I'd also like to know if
GigaStudio 2.5 will work at all.

Many thanks,
~ L

Hi,

I use Sonar 6 on xp64 with 4gb of ram, and a dual core 4200 AMD chip.
Been running this since Sonar 6 came out and have had next to no
problems once I sourced the drivers for my M-Audio soundcard and
graphics tablet.

Most of my VST synths that I have seem to be working okay as Sonar uses
something called bitbridge which helps with 32bit vst's working on 64bit
OS. The only problems I have had are with Albino 3 and Firebird but both
these are going to be fixed shortly. If you have commercial VST's then I
would suggest looking at the developers website or pay a visit to KVR
where a lot of developers have their forums and see if anyone has had
any difficulties.

Hope this helps

Adrian

Gigastudio 2.5 will NOT work on a dual processor / dual core machine of any
kind. Do a search on the Northernsounds Giga forum & you'll see that this
is a known issue. I found out the hard way & still shudder as I recall the
pains I went thru trying to discover why I was getting BSOD's so frequently.
Giga 3.x has resolved the issue. I know GVI had some growing pains with it,
but they may be resolved by now.

GVI has been tested on 64bit systems. It also comes with a dongle.
